Its work in Wales encapsulates Gallagher's approach to developing people, producing more than 75 fully-fledged apprentices since 2012. With an aim to create continuous technical and personal development within an inspiring working environment, the company has picked up a string of accolades for its education and ethics, backed by a major Welsh Government grant that helped to create extra jobs and establish Wales at the heart of its operations.

"We have a fantastic talent pool right on our doorstep," says regional managing director Mike Jones, who speaks proudly of the calibre of his colleagues, having had his own leadership abilities recognised by the Leading Wales Awards. "The level of trust placed in our company by the Welsh Government gives us the firm belief that we are on the right track in creating a centre of insurance excellence in the heart of Wales. Their support enables us to attract a conscientious workforce with the strong work ethic Wales has to offer, which is so compatible with our own values."

Helped by around 165 staff across Wales, Gallagher's most recent triumph came in the form of the Employer of the Year title at the Inspire! Adult Learning Awards 2017. The apprenticeships have an impressive completion rate of more than 90%, delivered by local learning providers and often resulting in swift promotions for the new arrivals. "Our commitment to enhancing the skills, qualifications and recognition of our colleagues has directly contributed to improved customer service and retention," says Jones. "It has given us a professional, qualified, loyal workforce, allowing us the stability and confidence to keep investing in our growth aspirations."
