Newport-based company, Tomoe Valve, manufactures high performance butterfly valves that are used in a wide variety of projects all over the globe.

Established in 1986, the company initially worked principally across the oil and gas sectors. However, in more recent years, as investment in fossil fuel energy sources decreases, it has diversified to supply its valves to a wider range of industries. With rapid global growth in sectors such as food production, water treatment and construction, demand for Tomoe Valve’s products is skyrocketing.

An international outlook has always been a key focus for the business, with its parent company, Tomoe, based in Japan.

Today, Tomoe Valve exports to over 57 countries across North America, Asia, Europe, South America, and the Middle East, with international sales accounting for 90% of the Welsh manufacturer’s trade.

The company is eyeing further business growth overseas, in the US where it recently secured a £1.6 million contract for a new silicon battery factory, and another more recent deal with the Japanese Government to supply a 0% emissions power plant converting waste product from fertiliser to energy.

Key to Tomoe Valve’s export success has been its regular presence at market visits in target regions, including to the Middle East and the US, which have been supported by the Welsh Government. The visits have enabled it to meet prospective customers, directly leading to new business.

The company has also received support with developing its supply chains and conducting market research, which have helped identify diversification opportunities in target regions and understand how to bring its products to various international markets.

Being based in Wales has given Tomoe Valve the opportunity to join other Wales based businesses, who are exporting all around the world, at global and domestic trade events to meet potential distribution partners and clients overseas.

Tomoe Valve credits the strong transport links, extensive government support, and access to connection with other Welsh businesses for its export success, helping it to meet and partner with other businesses overseas.

Denise Cole, Finance Director at Tomoe Valve Ltd said:

"Wales is an incredibly attractive place to do business, not just because of its excellent transport links, with London and Birmingham just two hours away, but also for the quality of life it offers. There’s more space, stunning countryside, and a real emphasis on work-life balance. From a business perspective, being based in Wales allows us to stand out in our industry, with less competition compared to parts of England and greater opportunities to shine.

“What truly sets Wales apart, though, is the unparalleled support from the Welsh Government. Their support has helped us connect with businesses worldwide, strengthening our global presence. As a bespoke manufacturer, this support has been instrumental in our success, enabling us to remain agile and deliver tailored solutions that larger competitors simply can’t match."
