Recycling on a grand scale

ecube solutions
A Welsh company nestled in the beautiful Vale of Glamorgan is addressing challenging times for the aviation industry, with so many aircraft coming out of the skies as a result of the pandemic, offering aircraft recycling services to many of the world’s largest airlines.

eCube Solutions is a global player in aviation services, a leading provider of storage, disassembly and parts re-use and recycling services to global aircraft owners, including major airlines and aircraft leasing companies, giving them maximum value from a retired aircraft.

eCube was one of Bro Tathan business park’s first tenants, and their base provides a unique combination of offerings – access to the south Wales pool of aviation talent, a regulated airfield with permanent Air Traffic Control, a runway which accommodates aircraft of all sizes, easy access to Cardiff, Cardiff airport and the motorway network. This is all supplemented by the backing of the Welsh Government, with the Airfield Development Team and Business Wales supporting the company’s development and projected growth plans.

The eCube site is a glue pot for plane spotters, with a whole range of colourful tailfins lined up as new arrivals fly in weekly. One of the recent arrivals was the very last British Airways flight of its iconic 747 (‘Queen of the Skies’), wrapped in the BOAC retro ‘Gold Speedbird’ livery, as it made its final journey from Cardiff Airport to its new home, where it will not be broken up, but preserved in pride of place at Bro Tathan to inspire future generations.

The retirement of the British Airways 747 fleet was brought forward several years as a consequence of the pandemic. Sean Doyle, British Airways’ CEO, said: “Knowing our last 747 will be preserved for future generations to enjoy at a new home in Wales gives us a great sense of pride and is a fitting end to this chapter of British Airways’ history."

The company last year received significant investment from Baird Capital, the direct investment arm of Baird, to support the continued growth of the UK business, alongside supporting rapid growth in its new continental European facility in Castellón, Spain, with plans to expand into North America, the world’s largest disassembly market.

eCube Solutions initially specialised in 'end-of-life' aircraft projects, but has subsequently developed expertise in delivering complete solutions, including aircraft parking and storage, care and maintenance, engine removal, parts storage, third-party logistics, customs management, carpentry and fabrication, disassembly and disposal and lease redelivery.

Bro Tathan is located on the Cardiff Airport and Bro Tathan Enterprise Zone, and includes a fully operational 1,800m runway on a commercial airfield operated by Cardiff Airport. Many aerospace businesses already operate in the Bro Tathan area, including British Airways, Airbus, GE, Caerdav and Nordam. Also located at Bro Tathan is global car icon Aston Martin and production of its first SUV, the Aston Martin DBX.
