Genomics Partnership Wales (GPW) is the national framework that brings together clinical human genomics services, public health and pathogen genomics services and research to embed genomics across health care in Wales. Its aim, as Clive Morgan Managing Director, All Wales Medical Genomics Service (AWMGS) paraphrases is to “harness the potential of genomics to improve the health, wealth and prosperity of the people of Wales”, with a clear focus on integrating service delivery, research and innovation.

A key step in that integration is the development of a new co-located facility at Cardiff Edge, supported by a Welsh Government pledge of more than £15 million. Leaders including Michaela John (Head of Programme for GPW) and Clive Morgan have set out how bringing together national genomics service delivery partners, from different host organisations, for the first time in a new national genomics hub will create a distinct competitive advantage for Wales, shortening the distance between laboratory, clinic and industry collaboration.

For investors and industry partners, GPW provides a nationally coordinated platform with clear governance, strong clinical links with core service delivery partners including the AWMGS, Pathogen Genomics Unit (PenGU) and the Wales Gene Park (WGP) who collectively have a growing track record in areas such as cancer, rare disease and infectious disease genomics. That structure makes Wales an attractive place to co-develop precision medicine, diagnostics and data driven health solutions with a system that can move from pilot to population level deployment.
