Business backstory

Convatec, a global medical products and technologies company focused on solutions for the management of chronic conditions, holds leading positions in Advanced Wound Care, Ostomy Care, Continence Care, and Infusion Care. Convatec employs more than 10,000 colleagues worldwide and helps millions of patients living with chronic conditions every single day.

While Convatec’s products are used in almost 90 countries around the world, Wales plays a critical role in the company’s global operations. The company has a long-standing presence in Wales, with major sites in Deeside and Rhymney that support global research, development and manufacturing operations, helping bring innovative medical technologies to patients around the world.

Convatec’s commitment to pioneering trusted medical solutions to improve lives is helping the company lead in a highly competitive sector and makes it an important player in the vibrant Welsh life sciences community – in 2025, the company’s revenues across its categories were more than $2 billion.

Why Wales?

Convatec has been part of the Welsh life sciences environment for more than four decades.  Since establishing operations in Deeside in 1982 and Rhymney in 1986, the company has built a strong reputation for innovation, advanced manufacturing and skills development.

In 2026, Convatec completed a £24 million investment in its Rhymney manufacturing facility, significantly expanding production capacity for Hydrofiber® technology, the proprietary platform that underpins many of the company's advanced wound care products. The investment strengthens Rhymney's position as a global centre of excellence and supports growing worldwide demand for innovative wound care solutions.

The expansion represents a major vote of confidence in Welsh manufacturing, supporting highly skilled jobs and reinforcing Wales' position as a hub for life sciences and medical technology. The project also supports Convatec's sustainability ambitions through investment in more energy-efficient operations and lower-carbon manufacturing technologies.

Alongside manufacturing excellence in Rhymney, Convatec's Deeside site plays a key role in research and development, helping shape the next generation of advanced wound care technologies.

At the heart of Convatec’s success is its people and a culture focused on continuous improvement:

"At Convatec, our culture is based on continuous improvement. We're constantly looking to invest and improve our manufacturing processes, but also develop our people," says Michelle Taylor, Supply Chain Director.

The company's Welsh sites bring together expertise in manufacturing, engineering, quality, research and supply chain, creating opportunities for colleagues to build long-term careers while contributing to products that improve patients' lives around the world.

Looking ahead, Wales will continue to play a central role in Convatec's future growth.

"We've had a long heritage in the life sciences industry within Wales, and we're very excited about the future and what that holds for the business," adds Matthew Cornish, Focus Factory Site Lead.

As Convatec continues to scale innovation and meet growing global demand, its investment in Welsh manufacturing, skills and technology demonstrates the important role Wales plays in helping deliver life-changing solutions to millions of people worldwide.
