Medical device company Zimmer Biomet states: ‘It’s not just what we make. It’s what we make possible.’ The living proof of that captivating slogan is its new manufacturing plant in South Wales.

A European Centre of Excellence for Porous Coating is set to be established in Wales. This move is a result of a £2.5m investment by medical device company Zimmer Biomet, backed by financial support of £700,000 from the Welsh Government. The centre will enable the company to specialise in porous coating technologies used in the manufacture of orthopaedic implants.

The company’s sites in Bridgend, South Wales, Warsaw and Indiana (USA) are the only two porous coating facilities within the company.

Zimmer Biomet’s UK operation is a Welsh Government Anchor Company employing more than 800 people from all over South Wales at Bridgend’s Waterton Industrial Estate. A range of hip and knee replacement products are manufactured in Bridgend and exported globally.

Bridgend is also home to Zimmer Biomet’s Rapide Theatre Care programme, which allows the company to work closely with a number of hospitals in the UK, to make improvements to the delivery of orthopaedic care to patients. The company also collaborates with Swansea and Cardiff Universities to develop new orthopaedic products that treat patients with a variety of musculoskeletal conditions.

As UK Site Director Dr Marc Kneissler points out: “Zimmer Biomet has been located in Wales for more than 40 years. We have a strong heritage of employing local talent to manufacture globally important orthopaedic products that are supplied to more than 100 countries, from our manufacturing facility in Bridgend.

Many thousands of surgeons have treated millions of patients with our products, providing them with a vastly improved quality of life. We have partnered closely with the Welsh Government in recent years and, with its support, we have been able to grow our presence in Wales and employ significantly more Welsh men and women to further the development, manufacture and distribution of our life-enhancing products.”
