Nantgarw is famous for the maintenance of enormous aeroplane engines. The plant there was established over 75 years ago and GE has enhanced it with two state-of-the-art test facilities.
GE Aviation is a world-leading provider of commercial, military and business and general aviation jet and turboprop engines and components as well as avionics, electrical power and mechanical systems for aircraft. One of the largest GE Aviation Maintenance Repair and Overhaul sites in the world is based in Nantgarw. It’s been GE for 25 years.
Managing Director, La-Chun Lindsay, is ambitious for the next 25 years. “There are a number of factors that have enabled GE Aviation to continue investing in Wales. Building good relationships with educational institutions has allowed us to secure a great pipeline of talent. We have excellent relationships with our neighbouring colleges and universities and are always looking for new ways to work together. We keep the best local talent in Wales and attract the best from elsewhere to Wales too.
“We have an award-winning apprenticeship programme. Each year we have approximately 850 applications for just 25 places. Apprentices go through a rigorous training process with us and undertake a bespoke college course throughout the three-year period. We teach our apprentices to be good citizens as well as good aircraft engineers within our facility. Over the past 25 years, many of our apprentices have relocated to other GE businesses and many have moved into global leadership roles.
“Our great relationship with the Welsh Government has been vital to the growth and development of our site here in Wales. We work with a dynamic government team who have provided diverse support, ranging from investment in our apprenticeships to helping us purchase state-of-the-art machines and tools to bring new MRO procedures to Wales. Our day-to-day dealings are hugely strengthened by the close relationship we have with Welsh Government. We belong to a network of companies and have plenty of opportunities to work with government on the best solution for Wales.
“Our customer base is truly global. Wales is a great place as far as shipping engines, within Europe and further afield. Our location here in Caerphilly puts us right next to the M4, which gives us really good access to major airports. When you take all those things into consideration, Wales is a great place to locate to for a business.”
